History in Coral Springs Once Again

In May and June we have made history in Coral Springs once again.  In May, we were recognized by Inc. Magazine as having the fourth highest Median income in the country, in excess of $65,000.  I suggest the realtors make proper note!  Our City also held its first Affordable Housing Workshop.  It was comprehensive and addressed the economic development needs of our City.  We will be considering an ordinance to put together a Housing Trust Fund and other solutions to make sure we maintain a substantial number of dwelling units as affordable so that we can achieve our mission to become the premier community in the nation in which to live, work and raise a family.  I am especially appreciative of staff's proposal that we begin a pilot program to loan money to Charter School teachers in order to afford housing in our City.  I will urge the School Board to work with us and other municipalities along with the County to put aside funds to help other desperately needed professionals afford housing in our community.

In June, our City is making history once again as it marks the first month that four Commission members are holding regular office hours to serve our citizens!  Thank you Vice Mayor Gold and Commissioners Bruck and Boccard for committing even more of your time to a particular time to meet with citizens. I want to thank Starbuck's and Java D'lites for hosting my first Coffees with the Mayor.  I have obtained some great ideas from residents and met some super dads that coach their daughters in softball, too.  I must be frank with you, citizens.  It is a joy to be  of  service to you.  I remain pleasantly surprised by the respectful way in which you express your issues to me and I appreciate it.I also want to extend my appreciation to friends and family, especially my wife, for  yoursupport of my service to our City.Lastly, as we head into hurricane season I know that many of you are concerned, especially if you are waiting for permits.  As of this writing we have a 9-day turnaround for permits for roofs, shutters and hurricane-impact windows when we have received all of the proper information.  We have allocated more and more effective resources to address your needs at this time as there is a shortage of essential employees to properly review and inspect plans as necessary.  While we are continuing to do our best, please make sure you obtain your permit number from your contractor so that you can track your status online at www.coralsprings.org

As always, please also look at the website for my office hours or email me at sbrook@coralsprings.org if there is anything I can help you with.  I hope to see you at my Government Leadership classes in the Fall.  Enjoy your summer!

Your Mayor,Scott J. Brook, MBA
