Happy New Year!

Happy New Year friends! I am so thankful we have put some distance between us and hurricanes! I hope 2007 is an extraordinary year for you and your family. I have just returned from a National League of Cities’ conference and I want to share an important message with you.

One of the themes of the conference was “We.” As we interacted with elected officials from around the country we heard recurring issues: affordable housing; division of classes; education issues; etc. During the conference so many speakers suggested that “we” are the solution. I am hopeful that in 2007 we, as a community, find ways to increase the quality of education in our state. I am hopeful that we stand for nothing less than bipartisan solutions to our community issues. As your Mayor, I invite you and implore you to be active with our local community so that we work together in developing a downtown that is good for all of us, enhancing the quality of the lives of all of our families and make our City the greatest possible.

I suggest that we have much more power if we are part of a team. As a citizen of Coral Springs, you are integral to our team. Please contribute to diminishing the distance between “us” and “them” because you can’t have POWER without WE.

We are inviting all of you to join us during our 17th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration. The festivities begins January 12 with a weekend full of activities for the entire family.

Tickets are still available to hear former Virginia Governor L. Douglas Wilder speak during a business luncheon and a community celebration. The luncheon will be held at the Coral Springs Marriott,

11775 Heron Bay Blvd.
, and tickets are $40 each. A community-wide celebration featuring Wilder’s keynote address, along with music and entertainment, will take place at 7 p.m. at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts,
2855 Coral Springs Drive
. Tickets are $5 for adults and $1 for children 17 and younger. A VIP reception following the address costs $20.

On Friday, January 26 at 7 p.m., a step show competition will take place at Coral Springs High School,

7201 W. Sample Road
. Funds from the show will help support Martin Luther King, Jr. scholarships for local teenagers.

The City is still accepting applications for scholarships. Students can receive an application from their high school B.R.A.C.E. advisor or by calling 954-344-1005. Students must be able to demonstrate financial need, as well as have a clear community service focus.

It’s still not too late to mentor a high school student. Our next mentor training will take place on Thursday, January 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the West Wing of City Hall. I have mentored a high school student for over 3 years and it has been a great experience. If you are interested, I encourage you to call Pat Mirabello at 954.344.5907.

We have a great list of performers at this year’s Family Concert Series. This month, Hot Brass Monkey, will delight us with their blues on Saturday, January 20 at 7 p.m. at Betti Stradling Park,

10301 Wiles Road
. The concert is free, and you’re welcome to bring your lawn chairs and coolers. For more information, please call 954.345.2200

On January 27, Japanese sculptor Yoshin Ogata and Argentine sculptor Perez Celis will “Break the Block” for the last two sculptures of the International Sculpture Symposium. Artists from five continents were invited to participate in the Museum’s Artist in Residence program. All art will be permanently placed at the International Peace Garden adjacent to the Museum. I encourage residents to stop by, get to know the artists, and help them “Break the Block.” For more information, visit www.csmart.org.

As always, please visit www.coralsprings.org for City news and visit our Event Calendar to view the Commission’s scheduled office hours. Feel free to email me at sbrook@coralsprings.org if there is anything I can help you with. I am honored to be a part of our wonderful community and I hope to see you at one of our events soon.
