Mayor's Message for August (Parkland Life)

By the time you read this, our children will soon be headed back to school. Time does fly. Congratulations to Billie Miller and all of your wonderful employees and students for achieving an "A" rating for Coral Springs Charter High School. You have worked hard and your efforts have paid off!

Now that the legislature has come to a decision on property taxes, the entire Commission, along with City Manager Michael Levinson and staff, are working to craft a budget that fits the with the least amount of impact on our residents. At the time this letter was written, the Business Plan has not been finalized, but I encourage you to visit www.coralsprings.org for updates.

I'm excited to share with you the details one of the City's newest programs. Through the end of this year, the Building Department will be offering an Express Permit Pilot program every Wednesday for a variety of small structural, electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits. Please note that this process is only available for small permits on minor revisions, such as shutters, roof repair, burglar alarms, water heater replacements, etc. Permits received in the drop-box at City Hall South, 9530 West Sample Road, by 3 PM each Wednesday will be reviewed and ready for pick up by 1 PM on Thursday. Each permit will be subject to an expedited fee. Contractors are limited to two permits per day and must register with the City prior to using the program. Registration forms are available at coralsprings.org. For more details, call the Customer Care Center at 954-344-1025. I want to especially thank Commissioner Boccard for working tirelessly with management to effectuate this great change.

With the beginning of the school year quickly approaching, the Coral Springs Police Department is looking for volunteers who would be willing to commit to give a minimum of two presentations throughout the school year for the Coral Springs Police Department Youth Mentoring Program. Each presentation should be no more than 45 minutes and the topic can be selected by the volunteer on one of the following topics: educational choices, career and/or employment skills, decision making and goal setting skills, sharing their personal life experiences and being a role model to youth. All volunteers are required to complete background screening and a one-hour training session. For more information or to sign up as a volunteer, please call Jenny Rebour at 954-346-1289 or e-mail jrebour@coralsprings.org.

The Coral Springs Martin L. King, Jr. Committee is presenting its second annual "Golfing for the King" Golf Classic, to be held on Friday, September 14, 2007 at the Heron Bay Golf Club, located at 11801 Heron Bay Boulevard in Coral Springs. This event will benefit the Martin L. King Jr. Scholarship Fund for Coral Springs high school students regardless of ethnicity. The scholarship is based on financial need and academic achievement. Since the scholarship program is entirely dependent upon the generous contributions of individuals and corporations, your donation to this cause is very important. All donations are also tax-deductible. The fee to participate is $125.00 per person or $500.00 per foursome. To register for golf, or for sponsorship opportunities, contact Carey Suissa at (954) 649-3839 or Joyce Campos at (954) 344-1005 jcampos@coralsprings.org.

As always, please visit www.coralsprings.org for City news and visit our Event Calendar to view the Commission's scheduled office hours. Feel free to email me at sbrook@coralsprings.org if there is anything I can help you with.
