Mayor's Message - Neighborhood News

I recently visited Country Hills Elementary School and had a wonderful visit. I met many enthusiastic and friendly children with many intelligent questions. I am trying to visit every elementary school so that our children can feel connected to government and know that they matter to our City Commission.

If your child tells you they want to write an idea to the Mayor, please encourage them to do so. During this visit I learned that several children want another toy store now that Toys R Us and Kay-Bee Toys are not in the City. I learned that many children love their city and appreciate that we are one of the safest cities in the country. One of the students at Country Hills will soon be Mayor for the Day and you will read more about him or her in a future article. You would not be surprised that the children wanted to know what I could do about that FCAT!

On April 15, I took my children, A.J.(8) and Sammi (6) to their first show. We saw Taravella's Production of Les Miserables and it was fantastic! Congratulations to Lori Sessions and all of the children and proud parents involved in such a professional show. I am so proud to see your work and I look forward to congratulating you on your achievement at a future Commission meeting. My children were rapt at attention and it was an unforgettable day for us. Thank you.

With hurricane season just around the corner, it's important for our residents to be prepared. Our Coral Springs magazine is a great source of information and it includes a summary of all the City can do for you before, during and after a hurricane. In the event of a hurricane, residents can reach the City's call center at 954-344-1001. You can also log onto coralsprings.org or watch CityTV Channel 25 for updates. Coral Springs residents will soon be able to tune their radio dials to AM 1670 as the City prepares to launch its own emergency radio station. CityRadio will deliver information about City services, upcoming events, weather updates, and emergency bulletins when necessary. Stay tuned for the official announcement.

Please remember that we welcome the public to attend and speak at every Commission Meeting. We meet the first and third Tuesday of every month at City Hall (9551 W. Sample Road) at 6:30. Public comment typically begins at 7:30 pm. If there is someone you know that has achieved something special in our City and you would like to see the Commission recognize him or her, please email me at SBrook@Coralsprings.org. Thanks Neighborhood News for allowing me to have this column and for keeping our residents informed of some great tips to improve the quality of their lives through your writers. Please look at our website, www.coralsprings.org, for information on hurricane preparation, mentoring, volunteering and how and when you can meet with me and the rest of our Commission.

Lastly, please save October 11 on your calendar for another great community event. Festival of the Flutes will be returning to the Marriott at Heron Bay for the 4th annual fundraiser to benefit various local charities hosted by PNA. For more information, please look at www.pnanetwork.com or www.festivaloftheflutes.org.
