The Local Economy

If you are reading this before November 4, please remember to vote in the most important election of our lifetime! Let's hope that the economy turns around! Better than that, let's make the economy turn around!

Save the date of December 17 for our Holiday parade. If we haven't honored our Olympic heroes by then (their schedules have been so hectic), maybe you will see Dara Torres and Misty May Treanor then! We are all still so proud that Coral Springs was mentioned so much and that we had over ten Olympians with Coral Springs connections perform on the world's greatest athletic stage.

As we begin a new Fiscal Year, I'd like to thank City staff for all of their hard work in developing the Business Plan. Not only did we take resident's input into consideration, but we did what we thought would be best for the community as we face property tax reform cuts. Our core services will remain intact and we remain committed to our serving our residents. Despite our cuts in revenue, we developed innovative and low cost initiatives, while still saving residents an average of $60 in City taxes. If you'd like to help a family in need this Thanksgiving, please donate non-perishable items, such as canned yams, boxed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, canned vegetables, rice, canned fruit and cookies. You may also donate monetary contributions. The deadline for donations is Friday, November 7.

Residents may also help families by purchasing an Entertainment Book for only $30. This book will grant residents great savings in dining, shopping and travel. Part of the proceeds will go towards the City's Thanksgiving Baskets. Each book contains thousands of dollars worth of 2 for 1 and up to 50% discount offers. For more information on how you can help, call 954-345-2210 or 954-346-1746.

The City is working together with Representative Ari Porth and the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to provide a new convenient ways to acquire driver's licenses and identifications. Starting in September, the Mini-FLOW (Florida Licensing on Wheels) team will set up shop at the City's Commission Chamber on the last Monday of each month from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. No written or driving tests will be given at this site. Residents will be able to change an out-of-state license to a Florida license, renewals, duplicates for lost, stolen license, address/name changes, children ID cards, reinstatements, and emergency contact information registration. Tentative dates are scheduled through the end of 2008, including October 27, November 24 and December 29. No appointments are necessary. For more information, visit www.flhsmv.gov or call 954-344-1000 or 954-346-2810.

I am writing this from our local Starbucks right before another Coffee with The Mayor. I want to thank Miguel and Starbucks, Johnny and Whole Foods, Sal and the Breakfast Joint, Barry and Dunkin' Donuts, Alejandro and Winestyles and Jim with his crew at the Wine Warehouse for hosting me to meet with citizens regularly. Remember, Buy Coral Springs and let's support our local economy. Have a great November and let me know if there is ever anything I can do for you. You can email me at Sbrook@coralsprings.org or call me on my cell at 954-895-0480.
