City Commission Work

     In the past months, the City Commission worked on a very important issue affecting the quality of life and future of Coral Springs. After extensive discussions and a comprehensive analysis of the economic development needs of our City, we have approved the Affordable Housing Ordinance. The ordinance includes the development of the Housing Trust Fund for down payment assistance, second mortgage loans and other solutions to make certain that we close the affordability gap for teachers, nurses, public safety and other members of the workforce wanting to live in Coral Springs.

     There is no better time than September, during National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, for Coral Springs men to talk with their health care providers about this disease so that they can make informed decisions about maintaining their prostate health.             Almost one third of prostate cancer cases are found in men under the age of 65. Please take the time to get screened when appropriate and find out more about this devastating disease.  

I hope you all join the Coral Springs Fire Department for the 2006 Fire Prevention Extravaganza Day, on Saturday, September 30 at the Heron Bay Wal-Mart. Last year, close to 1,000 children and their families took part in this fun-filled, educational day. Children will be able to explore the inside of a real fire engine and learn how to use a real fire hose. Free arts and crafts, face painting, and clowns will also be available for children, as well as lots of free goodies for kids and adults. Hot dogs and Hamburgers will be sold for a minimal amount as a fundraiser for the Fire Department Auxiliary.

I’d also like to invite everyone to attend the City’s International Dinner Dance on Saturday, September 30 at 7 p.m. This special event celebrates the diversity of cultures from around the world with a medley of international customs, food and dance. This year’s event features a wonderful dance troupe from Panama. Please call 954-344-1063 to purchase your tickets.

I am proud to announce that the Sawgrass Nature Center (SNC) will be holding it’s grand opening October 18. I’d like to thank Joan Kohl, founder and president of SNC, for her hard work and dedication in developing this wildlife rehabilitation center. The center currently provides care for injured, sick or orphaned wildlife and will be offering a variety of education exhibits soon.
