Column, Jan. 28
I recently was in our Nation's Capitol for the US Conference of Mayors and the Inauguration. It was an incredible atmosphere. It was hard to believe that despite the throngs of people, including many who could not get to the National Mall, that there were no incidents. People were calm, cool and just excited to be there. I was thrilled to personally cheer on the JP Taravella Marching Band as they marched in front of the National League of Cities' headquarters at twilight! I am very hopeful for our Nation's future.
I was fortunate to meet President Clinton, T. Boone Pickens, Kerry Williams, Mayor Bloomberg and also hear from Governor Schwarzenegger. One common theme that prevailed through my several days in D.C was the need for patience and contribution from everyone. There will certainly be tough times ahead. However, I am confident that by providing value, being persistent and by continuing to move forward that our community will be even stronger in the years to come.
As a result of President Obama's commitment and a speech given by Rep. Barney Frank, I anticipate that our City will receive a fair share of funds from the next major set of grants to help stave off some future foreclosures in our community. I also believe that we will successfully use the $3.3 million allocated to our City to help homebuyers with foreclosed homes in the next six months.
